Trees and Shrubs
• Plant container grown trees, shrubs and Roses if you can water them well until established.
• Prune rambler Roses by cutting out all shoots that have flowered to ground level.
• August is a good month to cut conifer hedges and slower-growing deciduous hedges, like Beech.
Flowers
• Water and feed hanging baskets regularly.
• Fill gaps in borders with new herbaceous plants and keep them well watered until established.
• Take cuttings of Geraniums and Fuchsias to over winter for next year.
Fruit
• Summer prune trained Apples and Pears and bush and fan trained Cherries.
• Plant tree and bush fruit if you can keep them watered.
Vegetables
• Keep a sharp eye out for caterpillars on Brassicas and hand pick or spray to control.
• Harvest and enjoy the fruits of your labour.
Lawns
• Mow regularly but don't cut the grass too short in dry weather.
• Use a liquid feed to green up the lawn.
• Maintain crisp lawn edges with a good sharp pair of edging shears.
Greenhouse
• Check plants for water mornings and evenings and ventilate freely.
• Damp down the path and benches to raise the humidity.
• Feed plants every 7-10 days with liquid feed.
Houseplants
• Water and feed plants regularly.
• Increase humidity by spraying foliage plants and standing plants in trays of moist clay granules.
• Finish any potting on of plants to larger pots.
Don't Forget
• Keep ponds topped up and feed fish well to build them up for the winter.
• Make sure you can cope with watering by buying a good hose, reel and sprinkler. |
