Trees and Shrubs
• Continue to plant root-wrapped Roses, trees and shrubs if the ground is not frozen or waterlogged.
• Knock snow off evergreens so the branches don't break under the weight.
• Select your Christmas tree, Holly and Mistletoe in good time for the festive season.

Flowers
• Scatter slug pellets around Christmas Roses to prevent damage.
• Check corms and tubers in store for rot. Dust with sulphur to deter disease.

Fruit
• Plant new fruit trees, bushes and cane fruits.
• Give fruit trees a tar oil winter wash to kill over wintering greenfly.
• Pruning of Apples and Pears is best done this month.

Vegetables
• Continue to dig heavy soil. Use a soil kit to test the pH and apply lime if necessary.
• Plan your cropping schedule for next year to give a succession of vegetables to eat fresh, freeze or store.

Lawns
• Continue to lay turf when the weather is reasonably warm.
• Prepare ground ready for sowing grass seed in spring.

Greenhouse
• Control grey mould with a fungicide spray or smoke pellets.
• Prune Grape Vines by reducing side shoots to within two buds of their point of origin on the main laterals.
• Sow lettuce for cutting in an unheated greenhouse in the spring.

Houseplants
• Pot up and water Amaryllis bulbs and place in a warm spot to stimulate growth.
• Remember that Cyclamen and Azaleas prefer cooler areas like hallways.

Don't Forget
• Melt ice on fish ponds by standing a pan of boiling water on the surface or install a pond heater.
• Protect newly planted conifers and evergreens with a windbreak of fine green netting.
