Trees and Shrubs
• Continue to plant trees, shrubs and roses if the ground is not frozen or waterlogged
• Cut back summer flowering Clematis like jackmanii to leave about 30cm of stem remaining.
• Many other shrubs can be pruned in late February e.g Buddleia, Spiraea and Caryopteris.
Flowers
• Plant Lily bulbs in well drained soil. Add peat to dry soil and sharp sand to heavy soil before planting.
• Apply blood, fish and bone fertiliser to herbaceous plants.
• Sow seeds of alpines in pans and stand them outdoors to get frosted.
Fruit
• Spray peach trees with fungicide to control peach leaf curl.
• Complete winter pruning of Apples, Pears, Gooseberries and Currants.
• Continue to plant tree, bush and cane fruits.
• Prune autumn fruiting Raspberries to ground level.
Vegetables
• Place first early seed potatoes in shallow trays to sprout in a light, frost-free place.
• Position cloches to warm up soil for early sowings.
• Apply nitrogen to Spring Cabbage, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Spinach and Onions at the end of the month.
• Plant Rhubarb crowns in enriched soil.
Lawns
• Spike the ground with a mechanical aerator to improve drainage.
• Top dress the lawn with a proprietary mix and brush in.
Greenhouse
• Make sowings of bedding plants like Begonia, bedding Dahlias, Lobelia, Nicotiana, Petunia and Salvia in a heated propagator.
• Pollinate Peach flowers by hand with a soft artists brush.
• Start tubers of Achimenes, Begonias and Gloxinias into growth in a temperature of 18-24‰C
• Sow early summer Cabbage and Broad Beans in gentle heat to plant out in March.
Houseplants
• Stockpile compost and pots ready for re-potting which can start next month.
• Increase humidity by spraying foliage with tepid water every few days.
Don't Forget
• Keep off the ground when it is very wet to prevent damage to the soil structure. |
