Trees and Shrubs
• Plant bare-rooted roses adding peat and bonemeal to the soil.
• Trees and shrubs can also be planted if the ground is not waterlogged or frost bound.
• Cut back established rose bushes by half to prevent wind rock.
Flowers
• Continue to plant bulbs and spring bedding like Pansies and Wallflowers.
• Cut back and tidy herbaceous plants.
• Lift Dahlias and store in trays of moist peat.
Fruit
• Plant new fruit trees, bushes and cane fruit.
• Apply potash to Strawberries and Raspberries to improve health and fruit quality.
Vegetables
• Sow seed of Broad Bean 'Aquadulce' in a sheltered well drained spot.
• Dig heavy land and leave rough for the winter weather to break down.
• Inspect stored vegetables for signs of decay.
Lawns
• Rake up fallen leaves before they turn the grass yellow.
• Continue to lay turf when the ground is frozen.
• Give lawns a final light trim if the weather has been mild.
Greenhouse
• Now is a good time to empty the greenhouse and scrub down glass and staging with disinfectant.
• A lining of bubble polythene will significantly reduce the heating bill.
• Cut down the watering. Most plants should be kept on the dry side.
Houseplants
• Feed winter flowering pot plants with liquid feed every fortnight.
• Adjust watering to suit the cooler temperatures.
Don't Forget
• Compost as much garden waste as possible. Apply an activator to speed rotting.
