Trees and Shrubs
• Plant trees, shrubs, Roses and hedges if the ground is not too wet.
• Peat and bone meal will give your plants the best start.
Flowers
• Continue to plant spring flowering bulbs in tubs, borders and naturalised in grass. Mix in Pansies, Wallflowers and Forget-me-nots for a glorious display.
• Plant new herbaceous perennials to give your garden the romantic cottage garden look.
• Lift Dahlia tubers and stand them upside down to drain water from the hollow stems.
Fruit
• Remove all old fruited wood from Blackberries, Hybrid Berries and Blackcurrants.
• Plant new fruit trees and bushes.
Vegetables
• Pot up herbs like Parsley, Mint, Sage and Thyme and move under glass for winter use.
• Sprouted seeds make a good winter vegetables and can be grown easily indoors.
Lawns
• Spike and rake lawns and apply an Autumn fertiliser.
• Turf can be laid if the ground is not to wet.
• Rake up leaves off the lawn to prevent the grass yellowing.
Greenhouse
• Lift and store Geraniums, Fuchsias, Marguerites and other tender perennials.
• Remove dead and dying leaves to discourage grey mould.
• Sow a lettuce like 'May Queen' for a winter/spring crop under glass.
Houseplants
• Reduce watering now, letting plants dry out a little between watering.
• Move plants nearer to windows as light levels fall.
Don't Forget
• Bulbs are still the best value in gardening. Plant now for massed spring colour.
• Buy a net to prevent leaves filling your fish pond. |
